Shrove Tuesday - Pancake day

Today is Shrove Tuesday. The very first British culture that I learn since I came to London. This week is my 4th week here...

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts: the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It's a day of penitence, to clean the soul, and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving that Christians used to undergo in the past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and receives absolution for them. When a person receives absolution for their sins, they are forgiven for them and released from the guilt and pain that they have caused them. (from Wiki)

In UK, Shrove Tuesday is often known colloquially as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday. From the name you will know that it will do something regarding to the pancake. Yes, we eat pancake as supper (British call dinner as supper), instead of proper meal.

Normally we have pancake as breakfast. This is the normal pancake that I made. The British's style pancake, the filling is just lemon juice and sugar. The children that I taking care love it.

This is tonite (Shrove Tuesday) pancake, with the filling cheese, ham or salami. It is because we eat as supper, so we need to add something that can fill full for tummy.

Since I am talking about pancake. Let me tell you all kinds of the pancake that I ate before.

This is Americans' style pancake, that I used to eat at US. In US we eat with maple syrup. My favorite is chocolate chip pancake.

This is Malaysians' style pancake - "Ban Chang Kuih". I love the thin one with brown sugar and peanut. I had try with curry chicken filling too, it was very yummy!

This is Taiwanese' style pancake - Scallion Pancake (葱油饼). I tried this at US Chinese restaurant. This is Americans' favorite dish when they dine in Chinese Restaurant.

ya Lent is widely celebrated by Christians in Singapore and Malaysia too.

I've tried Australian pancakes too.. also with fillings, some sweet and some savoury ones.. they are yummy. They call these restaurants Pancake Parlours...hehehe Used to work in one.. I think Australian and British share the same traits.
